PLYWOOD
Plywood is a versatile and highly workable building material that is both strong and flexible. Premium grade plywood is well suited to decorative applications such as walls, ceilings and furniture/cabinetry work.
Plywood is manufactured by bonding together multiple layers of thin wood veneer. The cross grain of the veneer is alternated for every layer, resulting in a strong yet lightweight panel.
Characteristics of Plywood
Plywood has high grade face and core veneers to not only allow superior finish, but to also increase impact resistance and minimise water penetration through knots that may arise in core veneers. This is a very useful quality in boat building material.
Strength and Stiffness
Generally in plywood panels, the outer most veneers have the greatest influence on strength and stiffness. Increasing the thickness of the face veneers will increase the strength and stiffness characteristics in the face grain direction. Thin face veneers with thicker underlying cross band veneers will tend to give the plywood more equal strength and stiffness characteristics in both directions.
